Throwback Thursday: Baseball

If this doesn't scream Americana, I'm not sure what does. That hand-painted sign with its manual scoring system was a sight to behold every week as this ragtag bunch of baseballers put up dozens of runs.

These pictures were from our Sodus Vipers years. The coach was a fan of the Dodge Viper and the name carried over to us. On the plus side, we got newly painted helmets, and uniforms with our names on them.

We sported many different uniforms over the years, including the classic blue with white-and-yellow stripes. Those things got turned back in at the end of every season, so they saw plenty of use.

There was also the Play It Again Sports year. I really liked Play It Again Sports (may it rest in peace), so I really enjoyed those ones. Here I am at third base. I totally forgot they put a chalk line on the field between the third baseman and the shortstop.

Little league was a simpler time. You saw the ball, you hit the ball, and then you ran until the other team stopped you. That's because there was no fence. So it helped to hit it far if you wanted to get your inside-the-park home run.

As we got older, we aged out of the Sodus teams, so we had to move over to Eau Claire to find a team.

And later yet, over to Berrien Springs.
