Field Trip

Augie and the other kindergartners had a field trip this morning to Sarett Nature Center. You might remember Augie's first field trip was to Sarett. This time we went to learn about making maple syrup.

After learning the basics inside, we went outside to see them in practice. Step one was to drill a hole in the maple tree.

We pounded a nail and hung a bucket, too. You'll just have to trust me on that. Then we yelled to find our fire guy. That's right, we had a fire guy.

On our way to the fire guy, we had to stop and pick up some sap that had collected in one of the other buckets at the nature center.

We found our fire guy. He had the fire good and hot for us. He told us all about heating up the sap in a large metal kettle.

He also showed us how the Native Americans would have heated the sap by pouring it into a log and warming it with hot rocks.
