Amid the onslaught of coronavirus news, the Michigan Press Association announced the winners of its annual Better Newspaper Contest this week. In fact, the annual conference was postponed due to the coronavirus. While we failed to repeat as Newspaper of the Year (thanks a lot, judges) we did bring home about a dozen awards. Including ...
... first place in Best Page or Page Design for our Oscars prediction pages. I'd like to take credit for my awesome design, but it was basically built around Katie Genellie Kohs beautiful graphic.
And Tony Wittkowski wrote the column. So I just had to slap it on the pages, and try not to make it look dumb.
We also took second place in the Best Newspaper Design category for our Feb. 24, 2019 edition, which included one of our bi-monthly photo pages from photographer Don Campbell. He won a couple of other awards, as he does every year, too.
We took a third place finish in the Special Section category for our Happily Ever After bridal magazine. A lot of work went into that one, both locally and at our sister papers, so I was happy it placed somewhere in the rankings.
