2018 Steinke Tournament Challenge Results
As you might remember, we revived the Steinke Tournament Challenge for this year's NCAA Tournament. Things got off to a fast start ... unless your name was Gracie or Augie.
Gracie's national champion, Oklahoma, lost in the very first game of the round of 64. And things didn't get much better for her after that. She only ended up with 5 Sweet 16 teams, and none past that. She finished with a whopping 46 points.
Augie did much better than he has in year's past. He didn't pick all 16 seeds to win their first round games this year ... which for the first time came back to bite him. His national champion, Virginia, now holds the dubious distinction of being the first No. 1 seed to fall to a 16 seed. He ended up guessing one Final Four team right, Villanova. He finished with a respectable 130 points.
My bracket did as poorly as any bracket I can remember filling out in the past decade. However, being bold and picking Michigan to win the national championship kept my bracket from completely sucking. Throwing Villanova in the Final Four gave me two out of four correct. The Wolverines couldn't get past the Wildcats, but I still finished with 162 points.
Gretchen got off to the strongest start, picking 24 of 32 winners in the first round. Virginia's loss cost her on of her national finalist, and loses by Michigan State and Xavier sunk her other Final Four teams. However, because Villanova was her last Final Four team, she carried the way and won the Steinke Family Challenge on the final night with a score of 200 points.
