Mini Vacation to 'Detroit'
Sunday morning, we packed up the troops (minus Tim) and made a quick trip to the east side of the state. Grandma wanted to see a couple of attractions, so we said we'd go with her. But first we had to get your standard family picture.
After a long drive that lasted longer than it should have due to the closer of an entire highway (one we needed, of course), we made it to Sea Life Aquarium in Auburn Hills. The kids were stir crazy, so they dove right in.
There were lots of little portals for them to look through and climb into.
They each got a little booklet that they could stamp as they walked around. When they were done, they turned them in for plastic gold medals.
And who doesn't want a gold medal?
I thought the big underwater head was the coolest part of the aquarium.
Gretchen tried to show us what it would look like if she replaced the statue.
Before we left, we made the obligatory stop in the gift shop. Pretty much everyone wanted a stuffed animal. I think Gracie wanted all of them, but we made her pick just one.
Yesterday, we visited the animals at the Detroit Zoo. The penguins were pretty active, which is more than I can say for the rest of the animals. It was fairly warm, so they were fairly uncooperative.
But grandma tried to take their pictures anyway, so we scoped out the map to see what else there was to do at the zoo.
We visited the butterflies ...
... and we spied a few birds ...
... and we made sure there was a thick layer of glass between us and the reptiles.
Instead of paying $75 for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches inside the zoo, we took the train back to the car to make our own meals. We locked Gracie in the car so she couldn't wander away. She's sneakier than she looks.
We walked around more after lunch, and tried to see more of the animals, but a lot of them were hiding from the sun. We heard there was a 2-day-old baby giraffe, so we tried to hunt her down. She wasn't outside, but her older brother was.
By the end of the day, the kids were drooping, so we took a second train ride back to the front of the park and made our way home.
