Visiting the Zoo ... the Air Zoo
More fun was had today by the Steinke clan. This morning, we drove up to the Air Zoo in Portage. It wasn't far away, and it looked like Augie would have fun there, so we gave it a whirl. Besides planes and spacecraft, they also had rides for all ages. One of the first things Augie did while we were there was ride the small rides in the Kids' Korner.
Also in the Kids' Korner were these metal plates for kids to color over to make a free piece of take-home art. This one was mine.
And this one was Gretchen's. Augie didn't want to sit still long enough to try it.
The zoo had lots of planes. Some were hanging upside down from the ceiling.
And some were sitting nicely on the floor, which was painted throughout.
Speaking of paint, all the walls in the main exhibit room were painted with murals from top to bottom. An employee told us one person did all the work, and for awhile it held the Guinness record for largest mural by one person. It was very impressive.
The rides were definitely Augie's favorite part of the zoo. He couldn't ride all of them, because he was too short, but the rest of them, he loved. Here, Augie rides the small Ferris wheel with me. I could fit in this one.
Then he rode the plane ride. I couldn't fit in this one. Gretchen probably wishes she couldn't fit in it either, because Augie had control of plane's altitude.
This one wasn't a ride, just an air balloon basket that people could climb into. It caused me to make an executive decision: I never want to ride in a hot air balloon. The basket is too small.
We hadn't even made it through the main exhibit floor before Augie started getting bored. Maybe we shouldn't have done all the rides first. Thankfully, he was admitted into the zoo free.
As we entered the zoo's new east wing, Augie and I took a break to check out the Forest of Dreams exhibit.
Inside the east wing, were lots of little interactive things to do, like trying to secure a payload at the International Space Station.
And sitting in the cockpit of a Blue Angel.
I think my favorite part of the zoo was the Infinity Room.
It made for a great place to get a family picture.
