Yard Crashers: 'It's Almost Fall' Edition

Summer is virtually over, but we've made some end of season changes before all of the nice weather is past. We've added a bird feeder on the tree next to the birdhouse. The woodpeckers really like it, as do the bluebirds, cardinals and other song birds. I filled it three times in the first week we had it.

Unfortunately, the squirrels love it too. Sicking Roscoe on them anytime I see them hanging from the feeder is my new favorite thing to do.

Gretchen also bought a few more tulips to plant in the flower beds. I don't even know how many are already planted (Gretchen probably does) because they came up during our early warm spell and then froze out.

Augie was happy to help mom move some begonias too. If it involves shovels and dirt, Augie's all in.

In the front yard, next to the mailbox, our mum has sprouted to life. We planted some mums blind this summer, not knowing what color they would be.

We really lucked out when this one flowered and matched our marigolds.

In the backyard, one of the other mums has sprouted yellow. It reminds me of spring, even though it flowers in the fall.

Sadly, however, all of the mums in the backyard grew so large, they fell over. We'll have to keep a better eye on them next summer, so they don't get so tall. As you can see, two (or three?) of them haven't flowered yet, so more excitement is ensuing.
